After undergoing a bone graft procedure, please adhere to the following guidelines for optimal healing:

• Bleeding Management: Avoid disturbing the area and refrain from forcefully rinsing or spitting. To reduce bleeding, bite down on a gauze pad placed over the wound for 30 minutes. Contact our office if bleeding continues.
• Medication: Take all prescribed medications, including mouth rinses, as directed.
• Oral Hygiene: Rinse with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 4-5 times a day after meals. Gently brush your teeth using a soft manual toothbrush. Sutures may be placed after the surgery and typically dissolve on their own.
• Swelling Management: Apply ice packs to the surgical area for 15-20 minutes, followed by an equal rest period. This will help reduce swelling in the first 48-72 hours.
• Bone Graft Dislodgment: It is normal for small pieces of the bone graft material to dislodge from the surgery site within two weeks post-surgery. These tiny pieces may taste like salt granules and do not require intervention.
• Dietary Restrictions: Stay hydrated and avoid spicy, sharp, and crunchy foods. Refrain from using tobacco and alcohol, especially when taking pain medications or antibiotics.
• Activity Restrictions: Limit physical activities immediately after surgery. If a surgical bandage was applied, keep it in place for 24 hours; do not remove it, as it will come off when ready.
• Suture Care: Follow up with our office for suture removal within one week post-surgery if needed. Call us if you have any questions about your healing or the type of sutures used.
• Healing Time: The bone graft site typically requires about 4-6 months to heal before implant placement. Consult your doctor to establish the follow-up schedule.
