Post-Exposure and Bracket Placement Care Instructions

Following your exposure and bracket placement procedure, it is crucial to follow these guidelines for optimal healing:

  • Oral Care: Avoid disturbing the area by refraining from forceful rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw. Some bleeding is normal during the first 24 hours. To reduce bleeding, apply gentle pressure by biting down on a gauze pad placed directly on the wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, contact our office immediately. Be sure to take all prescribed medications, including mouth rinses, as directed.
  • Oral Hygiene: After 24 hours, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 4-5 times a day after meals. Use a soft manual toothbrush to gently brush your teeth, including the areas around the surgery.
  • Suture Care: Sutures will be placed during the surgery, and some may not dissolve on their own. Avoid rubbing or manipulating the surgical site to prevent re-bleeding or damaging the sutures. A gold bracket may be attached to one of the sutures, which will connect to your braces wire.
  • Healing Process: The exposed area around the tooth will heal like an ulcer over 10-14 days, with tenderness gradually decreasing during this time. White or yellow discoloration is normal and does not indicate infection. Maintain cleanliness in the area with salt water rinses.
  • Swelling Management: Apply ice packs to the face near the surgical site for the first 48-72 hours to minimize swelling. Alternate between applying ice for 15-20 minutes and resting for an equal duration. If swelling persists after 24 hours, switch to a warm pack to enhance comfort and further reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Dietary Recommendations: Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, and avoid spicy, sharp, or crunchy foods during the initial recovery period. Refrain from using tobacco or alcohol for 24 hours following the surgery.
  • Activity Restrictions: Limit physical activities immediately after surgery to support the healing process.
