Post-Biopsy Care Instructions

After undergoing a biopsy procedure, please follow these guidelines for optimal healing:

  • Bleeding Management: Avoid disturbing the area, forcefully rinsing, spitting, or using a straw. If bleeding continues beyond 24 hours, bite down on a gauze pad placed on the wound for 30 minutes, and contact our office if needed. Ensure you take all prescribed medications, including mouth rinses.
  • Oral Hygiene: After 24 hours, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 4-5 times a day after meals. Gently brush your teeth with a soft manual toothbrush, being careful around the surgical areas. Sutures may be placed during surgery, and most will dissolve on their own. If a LASER was used, avoid touching the site to prevent re-bleeding.
  • Swelling Management: Apply ice packs to the surgical area for 15-20 minutes, followed by a rest period of the same duration. If swelling persists after 24 hours, use a warm pack in 15-minute intervals as needed to alleviate discomfort and swelling.
  • Dietary Restrictions: Stay well-hydrated and avoid spicy, sharp, and crunchy foods. Refrain from using tobacco and alcohol for 24 hours post-surgery, especially when taking pain medications or antibiotics.
  • Activity Restrictions: Limit physical activities immediately following surgery.
  • After-Hours Assistance: During office hours, we will provide immediate attention to any concerns. After hours, please contact our office for further guidance. In the case of a serious or life-threatening emergency, call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.

Follow these instructions closely to ensure a smooth recovery process. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office. We’re here to support you throughout your healing journey.
